Moving Tips and Tools
With years of experience in the moving industry, we’ve gathered invaluable knowledge and tools to make relocations as smooth as possible. Because our ultimate goal is to take the stress out of your moving experience, we’re eager to share these insights with you. Whether moving within the UAE or to another location, these tried-and-true tips can guide you to a more streamlined and worry-free transition.
Packing Materials
If you want your stuff to make it from point A to point B in one piece, go for strong, durable boxes with lids. Dar Al Salam Movers and Packers has you covered with custom boxes for moving. Trust us, they’re way better than the boxes you’d get from a grocery store. Here’s what you’ll need for packing:
- Plastic bags and labels so you know what's what.
- Tissue or craft paper for wrapping up delicate items.
- Corrugated paper rolls for anything breakable.
- Gummed tape (1 1/2 to 2 inches wide) to seal the boxes tight.
- Markers and labels for marking what's in each box.
- Notebook and pencil to keep track of it all.
Packing Glasses & Fancy Glassware
- First, stuff your glasses with crumpled tissue or packing paper.
- Lay each glass on packing paper. Roll once or twice, then fold the sides in.
- For extra safety, use corrugated paper rolls or segmented boxes.
- Place heavier items like dishes at the bottom of the box and glasses on top.
- Keep delicate glasses upright, never on their sides.
Packing Dishware
- Start with a medium box and cushion the bottom with crumpled packing paper.
- Place a plate in the centre of some stacked packing paper.
- Pull one corner of the paper over the plate, then add a second plate and do the same, moving clockwise.
- Add a third plate, then fold in the remaining corners of the paper over it.
- Flip your stack of plates upside down and re-wrap the entire bundle using the same method.
- Seal it all up with packing tape.
- Stand the wrapped plates on their edge inside the box.
- Repeat for all types of dishes. For smaller ones, you can stack more in a bundle.
Packing Tips for a Smooth Move
- Start by creating a strategy: Pack one room at a time. This approach keeps you organized and will make your life easier when it comes time to unpack in your new place.
- Wait to leave everything until the last minute. Try to pack a couple of boxes each day, beginning well in advance of your moving day. This will reduce stress and make the whole process more manageable.
- Clearly label all your boxes, specifying both the room they're destined for and a unique box number. Consider keeping a detailed log of these details—how many boxes per room and the total number of boxes you've packed. It's even helpful to include a comments section in your log to note the condition of certain boxes or the location of high-value items.
- If you have items that are particularly valuable or fragile, make sure to notify your movers in advance so they can prepare to give those items the special attention they deserve.
- Be prepared with plenty of "filling" materials like bubble wrap or packing peanuts. These will come in handy to cushion your valuables and fill empty spaces in the boxes, preventing items from shifting during the move.
- Double-check that the bottoms of your boxes are secure. The last thing you want is for the bottom to fall out when moving.
- Opt for packing tape over masking tape. It's more durable and will keep your boxes closed and intact throughout the move.
- When loading up a box, always place the heavier items at the bottom and the lighter items on top. This keeps the box balanced and makes it easier to move.
- Aim for each box to weigh at most 50 pounds. Generally, the heavier the item, the smaller the box it should go in.
Cars & Motorcycles
A few preparation steps are necessary when shipping cars and motorcycles on a moving van. First, drain almost all of the fuel from the tanks. This is particularly important for safety reasons during transport. For motorcycles, disconnecting the battery is also advisable. Additionally, if you’re moving in the winter, ensuring that your automobile’s antifreeze levels are sufficient to guard against freezing in colder temperatures is essential.
Barbecue Grills & Gas Cylinders
Packing up your barbecue grill involves some specific steps to ensure safety and prevent damage. Wrap the grates and briquettes individually in newspaper, or place all the briquettes in a single grocery bag. Once wrapped, place these components in a box and use additional paper to pad the box, minimizing movement during the move. It’s important to note that gas cylinders should not be placed on the moving van even if they have been professionally purged. This safety protocol should be strictly followed whether you’re moving locally in Dubai or to another city in the UAE.
